Advanced Materials

Materials underpin society; contemporary examples include the ubiquitous use of semiconductor chips, and plastics. The current challenge is to design materials that can be produced sustainably (likely through the creation of circular economies) and cheaply in a manner that transforms technologies, e.g., carbon capture and separations, water purifications. Artificial intelligence can impact many areas of this enterprise. These include the use of ML tools to discover new materials with desired properties. Looking to the future it can be used to discover and optimize processes that can create materials with desired properties from building blocks.
